(CBS Connecticut) — One option on the table for I-84 in Hartford: Shut the highway down, while it is rebuilt.
The State Department of Transportation’s I-84 Hartford Project newsletter discusses the possibility of closing the highway during work on the aging portion of the expressway through Hartford. An article that continues on page 4 discusses the possibility of a highway shutdown.
The DOT writes that closing the highway would reduce construction time, make for a safer construction process, and allow people to get back to their regular lives more quickly.
But the DOT says it is not sure if it can close the highway, or limit the amount of traffic it carries during construction.
The department says taking the more traditional approach of building a new highway next to the old one, would be difficult because the corridor for the highway is very narrow.
It could be a decade before construction starts.
