The Women’s Beat with Bob Joyce – The Flyers

It’s another cold morning in Albany where I’ve seen a few flakes fly outside my hotel window. But with a win tonight over Dayton in the Regional Finals, 85 and sunny is just a few days away.

So what about this 7th seeded Flyers’ team from the A-10 ? If you watch what they do on offense, they might just remind you of the team you root for…UConn. They spread the floor in the halfcourt, like to push pace when possible and their bigs like to get out on the perimeter and shoot 3’s…And they keep their turnovers to a respectable 15 per game (yes, that’s decent in WCBB) .

The Senior Duo of Andrea Hoover and Ally Malott have taken the Flyers to places they’ve never been. Win tonight and it’s the lead story on Sportscenter…These two played against the Huskies in November of 2011 in Storrs where the Huskies won by 40. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis had 6 -3’s in that game. Hoover started as a freshman and went 1 of 5, Malott was 1 of 2 from 3 off the bench. Since then, this duo has won 102 of 126 games they’ve played in a Dayton, most in school history and their first elite 8 appearance. And they’ve beaten Iowa St, Kentucky and Louisville to get here. Juniors Kelly Austria (10ppg) and Amber Deane, the A10 6th Player of the Year (11ppg) can also score. And they have some size in the post with 6-4 Jr Jodie Cornelle-Sigmundova of France and 6-5 So Saicha Grant-Allen of Hamilton, Ontario (yes, Kia Nurse knows her). They’ll be tested tonight light never before and this just in, UConn is not and will not take the Flyers lightly. Assistant Shea Ralph has the scout on this game. She likes their grit and the way they run their ball screen offense. Make a mistake and it equals points.

But here are the two keys for Dayton. Can they stop UConn ? And can they get to the FT line ?? Jim Jabir said Sunday the most conventional way to stay with the Huskies is to slow the pace down. But that’s not who they are. And at this point, they won’t change. As for the Free Throw line, Dayton on average is 17/25 from the line per game..UConn’s opponents make 6 per game as the Huskies only average 11 fouls per game. While Dayton commits 20 per game. That’s part of the challenge of playing UConn. Geno Auriemma teaches and preaches moving your feet along with good defensive posture all the time. The Stanford loss was this teams wake up call. And it’s the best thing that could have ever happened.

Logic says the Huskies should win and win easily. But Dayton wants to get to Tampa as well. The Flyers will give it their best shot. But even that might not be enough as the Ladies of Storrs seem to locked in and on a mission to three peat…
