The Women’s Beat with Bob Joyce – 3+4+23+30 = 1

If you we’re one of those 10,167 who watched the UConn Women beat South Carolina and traveled through some nasty weather Monday to watch, congratulations..You saw a special performance. As Geno Auriemma said afterwards, when the quartet of Breanna Stewart, Morgan Tuck, Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Moriah Jefferson all play their “A” game on the same night, there isn’t a team that can beat them..

And that’s exactly what they got against the Gamecocks. 7-7-7-7..Each hitting that many field goals in different ways. The 13-0 run that put the Huskies up for good, they all had a hand in. Tuck and Stewart aggressive from the start, KML started hitting three’s and well, Moriah Jefferson was just, wow. Can they give Moriah the Leiberman Award now and be done with it ? She controlled the game, made the right pass at the right time, made a made 7 fg’s and harassed Tiffany Mitchell and Bianca Cuevas all night long defensively. The two insane stop and go dribbles in the first half that led to layups were just amazing.

There were a few areas that need cleaning up..such as South Carolina’s 20 2nd Chance Points were a season high against the Huskies. But that’s SEC basketball at it’s best…I’ll say this, the Gamecocks are a good team. They were down 16 at the half and shot 44%..But the Huskies ripped em’ apart with their potent offense as they scored 24 points more against any team the Gamecocks have faced all season. Now, Dawn Staley has to make some adjustments as they head to the postseason…While they play 10, a fair amount of offense is from the bench. That has to change. Regardless what she decides to do, don’t be shocked if they’re in Tampa in April.

To say Gampel Pavilion was electric would be an understatement. There haven’t been too many Women’s Games in recent years (only ND) that’s the old building has been that crazy. 400 seats were turned back due to the storm and the students sucked them up. And if you made the drive from every corner of the state to get to Storrs, major props for you. You saw UConn WBB at it’s very best last night..and the math comes out to One…as in #1 in the nation….For now..
