TUESDAY 8-26-14: Finally, it is Game Week. The months of preparation will culminate on Friday Night at 7:02 when UConn takes the field at the Rent against BYU.It’s obvious the players are ready and the head coach is as well.

Bob Diaco was low key for the first 29 1/2 minutes (rough estimate) of his first game week press conference, until the final question by John Silver of the Journal Inquirer of Manchester. When asked what he expected to see from his team and what demeanor he expected, Diaco returned to that fiery personality that has endeared him to the players and the fans, saying he wants to see a team that is focused, resolute, aggressive, intense and tough. He wants to see animation and hear animation. He wants to see energy from individuals and as a unit. He wants to see four quarters of celebration and he would be disappointed if he doesn’t see that.

The players who had been requested by the press were in the back of the room and got the message loud and clear. It’s impossible to think that wasn’t the head coaches intent.

Diaco also said the evaluation period is still on going and to expect to see a lot of players on Friday and over the next couple of weeks. It makes all the sense in the world to me. All the practices, all the scrimmages can’t compare to when the bright lights go on and the games mean something. There is no better way to find out who you can count on.

The coach also went into a little more detail about the plan to play four running backs. Max DeLorenzo will start and get the bulk of the carries but Diaco says Josh Marriner, Arkeel Newsome and Ron Johnson will also get the ball . And if one player is performing better than the rest, they will continue to get the ball. DeLorenzo is anxious to be the starter and ready to take on a bigger share of the workload. The junior from Berlin says he has improved on his pass blocking and wants to show he can be a complete back. Max is a popular player with his teammates and along with Graham Stewart gives the team an edge that you need.

Wednesday night is our first Coaches Show of the year from Wood N’Tap in Vernon starting at 6 pm.Coach Diaco and two players will join me on air. I hope you join us in person.

And Thursday a pep rally will occur at the top of Fairfield Way across from Gampel Pavilion starting at 6:30 with the cheerleaders and marching band in attendance. The players and coaches will arrive at around 7. Should be a fun event

More later in the week including a look at the Cougars!
