Southington Firefighter Accused Of Setting Blaze

Southington police have arrested a local volunteer firefighter on allegations he set a trash bin on fire while newly installed surveillance cameras allegedly caught him in the act.

Twenty-four-year-old Christopher Newman of Bristol was charged with reckless burning and criminal mischief on Wednesday. Police say he set a trash bin on fire outside a chiropractor’s office in June.

Authorities say Newman posted $5,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned in Bristol Superior Court on Sept. 2.

Southington Fire Department officials say the allegations against Newman are in no way representative of the dedicated job town firefighters do every day.

The fire was contained to the trash bin and didn’t spread.
