Visconti And Pelto Race Against The Clock

By SUSAN HAIGH, Associated Press HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) –Two candidates hoping to petition their way on to the November gubernatorial ballot are busy collecting signatures as the deadline approaches.

Conservative Joe Visconti and former Democratic state Rep. Jonathan Pelto have until Wednesday at 4 p.m. to submit the signatures of at least 7,500 registered voters to the town clerks where those voters reside.

Visconti, a builder and contractor, appears more optimistic than Pelto about having collected enough signatures so far. But both men said Tuesday they believe the electorate is yearning for another option on Election Day besides Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy or one of the two Republicans, Greenwich businessman Tom Foley or Senate Minority Leader John McKinney.

Visconti says he’s receiving strong support from gun rights activists while Pelto says many educators are backing his campaign.
