(Middletown, Conn./CBS Connecticut) – Police in Middletown are charging an 18-year-old man after they say he stole a car Friday afternoon and crashed the vehicle during a pursuit later last evening.

Initially, police say things started just after one p.m. when a resident reported their car stolen after leaving it running in front of a Stonycrest Drive residence.

Later, just before six p.m., an officer in a marked cruiser spotted the gray Honda Accord at East Main and Maple Streets.

Police say the vehicle nearly hit two pedestrians.

The vehicle ultimately crashed, damaging a large tree, hyrdrant, and street sign.

Under arrest is Kenneth Holfer.

He’s facing a litany of charges, including larceny, engaging in pursuit, reckless driving, operating without a license and evading responsibility.

Bond has been set at $75,000 and Holfer is due in court on Monday.
