(Bridgeport, Conn./CBS Connecticut) - On Saturday, Bridgeport residents who have unwanted firearms are being urged to turn them in to police.

In exchange, those turning in handguns, rifles and guns deemed to be assault rifles will be eligible for a cash payout.

A working handgun could fetch up to $200.  Those turning in rifles could receive up to $100.  And an assault rifle coule net $400.

City officials stress this buyback if for Bridgeport residents only.

In the past, police have collected over 900 firearms in the program and distributed nearly $100,000 in cash and gift cards.

This weekend’s event takes place Saturday, July 26, at the Healing Tree non-profit between 10 a.m and 3 p.m.
