Demolition Begins At Former Amusement Park

WARWICK, R.I. (AP) _ Demolition has begun at the former Rocky Point amusement park to make way for a coastal state park.

Crews are removing asbestos and will demolish the dinner hall and other buildings, including the remaining cottages over the next two months.

The state purchased the land, which has panoramic views of Narragansett Bay in 2013, using about $9.65 million from an open space bond approved by voters..

The amusement park closed in bankruptcy in 1995.

The city has already put a shoreline walking path on the property, a portion of which may be closed for a time during the demolition work.

The state is planning a park with a system of walking paths, fields, fishing access, and other recreational amenities.
