Charges Filed Against Former New Haven Official

Criminal charges have been filed against a former New Haven official.

Former New Haven Alder Michael Stratton is charged with third degree assault and breach of peace.

The city official and prominent attorney was allegedly involved in a domestic dispute with a woman at an apartment building on Crown Street in the city.

Stratton resigned from his seat on the board of alders shortly after the incident.

After police announced they were investigating the incident at the apartment, Stratton tweeted “The machine is afraid. They libel and they slander anyone who speaks the truth. Don’t give up on the underdog. [New Haven] needs a powerful advocate.”

Stratton has been a critic of Mayor Toni Harp.

The woman, 20-year-old Courtney Darlington, was previously charged with assault and breach of peace.

While responding to the original incident, officers say they saw something that may have been marijuana.

New Haven Police are investigating why the officers did not seize what might have been illegal drugs.
