NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) – Swab Summer has started in New London.
The U.S. Coast Guard Academy yesterday welcomed a class of 263 new students to the annual summer training.
The students had to give up their cell phones and other electronic devices as they entered the academy.
They will be known as swabs for the next seven weeks as they are indoctrinated into military life.
Those who make it through the summer will become part of the academy’s corps of cadets and the class of 2018.
The Day of New London reports this year’s class includes students from 48 states, more than any class in at least 20 years.
The group also includes seven international students who are part of a military exchange program.
