HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Former Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman says the Sunni insurgent advance that’s occurring in Iraq should be a lesson to the U.S. as it withdraws troops from Afghanistan.
The former Senate Armed Services Committee member said Tuesday he hopes President Barack Obama decides not to remove all American troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2016, arguing both Iraq and Afghanistan “still need some backup from us.”
Lieberman said it “made sense” for the U.S. to leave some core military advisers, trainers and backup forces in Iraq “to protect all that we did there and all that was sacrificed.” Lieberman said he thinks the U.S. military pullout contributed to the bloody insurgency, which Lieberman called “a real crisis.”
Lieberman was in Hartford announcing this year’s recipients of his college scholarship fund.
