(CBS Connecticut) -- Nine members of the Connecticut Army National Guard’s Detachment 6, Operational Support Airlift Command have left for deployment in Southwest Asia.  The detachment,  commanded by Chief Warrant Officer 5 Cooper Hastings of Vernon,  will provide aerial surveillance and intelligence support to U.S. commanders in Afghanistan.

The five pilots and four aerial surveillance equipment operators fly a modified version of the C-12 passenger transport the unit flies in this country.

They report to Fort Bliss, Texas, for further training and validation before heading overseas for a tour of duty expected to last nine to twelve months.

Eight of the nine unit members have previously deployed — four of them two or more times.
