(CBS Connecticut) --Bridgeport marked the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion Friday with an afternoon ceremony including several World War II veterans.

Mayor Bill Finch.  whose father William Finch was part of the invasion force, says the gathering at Col. Henry Mucci Plaza was to remember those who lost their lives in the offensive that helped lead to the defeat of the Third Reich.

Senator Richard Blumenthal presented the elder Finch a flag that had flown over the Capitol, and other veterans were presented with flags, courtesy of Fourth District Congressman Jim Himes.
