WATERBURY, Conn. (AP) _ Nurses at Waterbury Hospital have approved a new contract after 15 months of negotiations.

The Republican-American reports the 400 nurses overwhelmingly voted in favor of the deal Wednesday and conceded to replacing their defined benefit pension plan to a 401(k) plan.

Union President Barbara Simonetta says the contract, which runs through September 2017, includes raises each year and also modestly increases the nurses contribution to their health care plan.

The union’s previous contract expired in September 2013, but the two sides began talks on the new deal in March of that year.

Hospital officials say having a deal in place clears a hurdle in a proposed takeover by Dallas-based for-profit hospital chain Tenet Healthcare.
