(CBS Connecticut) - Southwestern Connecticut Congressman Jim Himes today called for the resignation of the Federal Veterans Affairs secretary.

“Clearly he should have been more on top of what we will I fear learn, as the inspector general’s report said, is a systemic problem with the VA,” Himes said.

Secretary Eric Shinseki has been facing calls to step down, coming from members of both parties, following an interim report that found systemic problems at VA locations nationwide.

About 17-hundred veterans were kept off the official waiting list for appointments at the Phoenix VA hospital.

Himes and other members of the state’s congressional delegation have asked the VA to release more information on problems elsewhere in the country.
