Storms Cut Power

(CBS Connecticut) –  Severe thunderstorms in portions of western Connecticut have taken down trees and power lines.Thousands  of Connecticut Light and Power customers lost electricity Tuesday night.

In Southbury, the Emergency Operations Center was activated and the towns  Senior Center was opened as a shelter, Many  trees and utility poles came  down during the storm and First Selectman Ed Edelson says  Regional School District 15  canceled classes for  Wednesday as  precauation.

Edelson says the storm was powerful , but fast moving.He said he had heard of only  one lightning strike at a home  and there were no reports of flooding in his town.

New Milford, Bridgewater, Roxbury  and Kent were among   the other towns reporting significant damage and power outages.

There were reports of flooding in West Haven and new Haven.
