HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Connecticut is moving clear toward creating a new authority that will oversee and promote the state’s three deep water ports in Bridgeport, New Haven and New London.

The House of Representatives on Tuesday voted 147-0 in favor of a bill that creates the quasi-public state Port Authority. The bill now needs Senate approval before the General Assembly adjourns at midnight on Wednesday.

The port authority would be similar to the new Connecticut Airport Authority, charged with marketing the state’s airports. This latest organization will market the ports to domestic and foreign shippers, seek private investments, and pursue state and federal funding for dredging and other improvements needed to boost shipping and cargo capacity.

House Speaker Brendan Sharkey, who pushed for the bill, said the ports are “underutilized commercial hubs.”
