EAST HAVEN, Conn. (AP) _ East Haven police could soon be wearing cameras as part of a federal consent decree requiring changes to prevent bias.

The town in 2012 settled claims that officers engaged in a pattern of discrimination and abuse toward Latinos. The agreement mandated reforms of the police department. It resolved allegations by the U.S. Justice Department’s civil rights division that officers regularly used excessive force and retaliated against those who witnessed police misconduct or criticized officers.

One of the reforms required Tasers equipped with cameras but federal and town officials say in court papers that East Haven has experienced camera difficulties. They’re proposing officers wear cameras instead.

Four police officers were convicted of mistreating Latinos and others or obstructing justice and received sentences of four months to five years.
