HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - A government relations chief for the Human Rights Campaign is joining Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy’s office as his chief of staff.

Allison Herwitt currently serves as vice president for government affairs for the organization, which advocates on behalf of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered Americans.

She is scheduled to begin her new job with the Democrat on May 5.

Before working for the Washington-based Human Rights Campaign, Herwitt spent 11 years at NARAL Pro-Choice America where she worked as a lobbyist and later as director of government relations.

She has worked for Republicans, including as a public policy advocate for New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, specializing in welfare reform, employment and child care issues.

She also previously worked as an aide to Republican U.S. Reps. Marge Roukema and Susan Molinari.
