EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Chandler Whitmer threw for 163 yards and a touchdown Saturday in Connecticut’s first Blue and White Spring game under new coach Bob Diaco.
The White team defense beat the Blue offense 46-37, with linebacker Jon Hicks making eight tackles. The Huskies used a scoring format that awarded points for tackles, turnovers and defensive stops.
Diaco was hired in December after serving as associated head coach and defensive coordinator at Notre Dame.
Angelo Pruitt and B.J. McBryde each had a sack and a tackle for a loss.
Whitmer was the most impressive of three quarterbacks on the day working mainly with the second team offense. Whitmer began last season as the starter and was benched after an 0-4 start.
Casey Cochran, the leader coming in, was 10 of 20 for 91 yards and an interception. Tim Boyle, who also has starting experience, was 7 of 14 for 97 yards.
Max DeLorenzo led the offense in rushing with seven carries for 51 yards and a touchdown. Kamal Abrams had four catches for 51 yards, including a 24-yard touchdown reception from Whitmer.
