MIDDLEBURY, Conn._ George Frantzis II, an owner of Quassy Amusement & Waterpark in Middlebury, Conn., orders a University of Connecticut (UConn) flag online this morning after the UConn Huskies men’s basketball team won the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championship Monday night against the University of Kentucky Wildcats, 60-54.
Quassy and Beech Bend Park & Splash Lagoon, Bowling Green, Ky., made a friendly wager prior to the game with some pretty high stakes: the winning team’s flag will be flown from atop the opposing park’s wooden roller coaster. Quassy will ship the flag to Beech Bend Park & Splash Lagoon where it will be displayed at the crest of the “Kentucky Rumbler” roller coaster when Beech Bend opens on May 3. Both Quassy and Beech Bend are family-owned amusement parks and made the “high roller” wager after their home-state teams made it to the title game. “It was a fantastic, close game,” Frantzis said. “Our congratulations go out to our Huskies.” The victory marked the fourth national championship for UConn. Quassy opens April 26 and will be celebrating its 106th season.
