HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Trinity College has hired Joanne Berger-Sweeney, a neuroscientist and a dean at Tufts University, as its 22nd president.

She will become the first woman and the first African-American to serve as president in the 191-year history of liberal arts college when she takes over on July 1 from James Jones Jr.

Jones is retiring after 10 years as president.

Berger-Sweeney served as dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at Tufts in Medford, Mass., and previously served on the faculty at Wellesley College, her alma mater.

She was elected this week in a unanimous vote by Trinity’s Board of Trustees. Paul Raether, the board’s chair, says she is a natural fit for Trinity and says Trinity is a natural fit for her.
