University of Hartford Student Charged For An Alleged Hazing Incident

HARTFORD (CBS Connecticut) _ A university of Hartford student has been arrested for an alleged hazing incident off-campus.

George Sinclair, 21, of New London is charged with third-degree assault for his alleged involvement in hazing a sophomore into an “underground” fraternity.   Sinclair allegedly served as an Assistant Pledge master for the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

The University of Hartford says the fraternity has not been associated with the university for several years.

The Hartford Courant reports the freshman, who is a Muslim, went to police in November saying he was subjected to several hazing incidents.

The Courant says the arrest warrant states Sinclair beat the victim in the chest with a golf club.  When the victim fell to the ground, fraternity members surrounded him, spitting, pouring liquor on him, and making fun of his religion.

Sinclair turned himself in to police last week.  He was released on bail and is set to appear in court on March 27.
