Study: Technology Distracts Parents From Engaging With Their Kids

HARTFORD, Conn. (CBS Hartford) – A new study has found that technology distracts parents from engaging with their kids.

Researchers from Boston Medical Center found that devices like iPads or smartphones are used by many parents during dinners at restaurants, which creates friction with their children who are being ignored.

In conducting the study, researchers observed 55 families at numerous restaurants and found that 40 of them were distracted by mobile devices.

Nearly a third of parents used their devices during the entire meal.  Almost three quarters used their device at least once during the meal.

Researchers also noticed that some parents became abusive towards their kids if they were interrupted from using their smartphone or iPad.

The study was published in the journal Pediatrics.
