(Washington, DC/CBS Connecticut) – There’s a hearing taking place in Washington today of a Commerce subcomittee of Surface Transportation.
The subcommitte, chaired by Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal, looks to examine the current state of safety along the nation’s passenger and freight rail networks.
In addition, the subcommittee is expected to hear testimony on a recent spate of rail accidents and other key safety challenges that have occurred over the last year.
Blumenthal says it’s the first in a series of hearings that will look at the number of issues in the last year focusing on failings not only in Connecticut but also crashes in New York and North Dakota.
Among those expected to testify before the committee include Joseph Szabo, the administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration and Christopher Hart, the vice chair of the National Transportation Safety Board.
