The Women’s Beat with Bob Joyce – 31-0
The Marathon is over….the first of three segments of the season for the Top ranked UConn Women. And they’ve again run the table to a perfect regular season and Conference Crown. The win at #3 Louisville Monday again showed that despite how could the UConn Offense can be, it’s the old saying that keeps coming back to roost..”Defense Wins Championships.” And after the Cardinals rode the wave of emotion of 22,000 plus inside the KFC Yum ! Center, the Huskies clamped down, rushed Louisville shots and dominated the glass en route to a 20 point win. And like many games this season, different players stepped up at different times. Early on during the Louisville start, Kaleena Mosqueda Lewis played a huge role. In the first 13 minutes, she had 13 points and 7 boards en route to her second double-double of the season. Moriah Jefferson also hit a couple of three’s while the Cardinals did everything to keep Breanna Stewart in check..Like Stewart, Mo have been clutch many times in big games this season.
Then there is Stewey, “The Freak Show” or whatever you’d like to call her. Just be glad she plays for UConn. 22 points with the help of a big offensive 2nd half, a career high 14 rebounds and 4 blocks, the bigger the game, the better she plays. On the floor, she’s matured so much in the span of a calendar year and it’s likely she’s your AAC Player of the Year, a stone cold lock as a first team All American and a major player in the National Player of the Year voting. Like the great ones before her, all she wants to do is win and strive to be the best.
As the team approaches the American Women’s Tourney this coming weekend, there is no doubt who the favorite is. Of course, Shonni Schimmel is convinced that her Cardinals will beat UConn before the season is over…Oh really ?? The numbers she’s posted against UConn in her career would not indicate that. And what answers do the Cards have defensively against Stewart next to fouling on every play as they do ?? While sending the Huskies back to Louisville for the Regionals would be unfair to BOTH teams, it honestly wouldn’t matter unless the Cards play the game of their lives. And against UConn, that’s not going to happen…Not Monday or a month from now…The Cardinals don’t have enough to beat the Huskies..period.
Reminder that Saturday’s AAC Quarter-Final Game will be on our sister station, 96-5 TIC-FM at 1:45pm opposite the Men’s Game at Louisville….and be sure to listen to the Men’s Game tonight against Rutgers for Senior Night. Joe & Wayne will cover the Senior Night Festivities beginning at 6:41…Enjoy :)
