Commissioner Opposes Online License Plate Auction

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) – Connecticut’s Department of Motor Vehicles commissioner is urging state legislators to scrap a bill that would require the agency to set up a system for selling certain license plate registrations through an Internet auction.

In testimony to the legislature’s Transportation Committee on Wednesday, Melody Currey said the DMV has already studied the concept and concluded it would not develop an online auction system.

Currey said DMV has a modernization project underway and a license plate auction program “would require substantial funds to alter current programming” and would delay modernization efforts.

Currey said one other state, Texas, has undertaken a similar auction system for highly sought-after plates.

But she said the sales did not generate as much revenue as first expected.

Low-numbered license plate registrations are considered desirable by some residents.
