NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) _ A man who allegedly shot and killed his pet dog after it attacked his son has been charged with animal cruelty, police said Monday.
Frank Gavrish was arrested during the weekend in connection with the shooting that took place on Jan. 14, police Capt. Thomas Steck said.
Gavrish admitted shooting the dog twice after it attacked his child, who received treatment at a hospital for serious injuries, Steck said. Police said Gavrish initially told officers that the sound of gunshots reported in the neighborhood was a car backfiring and the dog’s body was found behind the residence.
Gavrish was charged with cruelty to animals and unlawful discharge of a firearm. He could not be reached for comment, and it was not immediately clear whether he has an attorney.
Steck said if the man had called police the officers could have dealt with the animal in a more humane way.
“The dog was aggressive and did attack the child, but this is not the way to go about remedying it,” Steck said. “We can’t have people discharging a firearm in in residential areas.”
