Newest State Senator Sworn In

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ The newest member of the Connecticut Senate has been sworn into office.

New Haven state Rep. Gary Holder-Winfield took the oath on Friday, days after being elected to represent the Senate’s 10th District. He fills the seat that was vacated by Toni Harp, who was elected mayor of New Haven in November.

Holder-Winfield on Friday submitted his letter of resignation as representative of the House of Representatives’ 94th District, which includes parts of New Haven and Hamden.

Secretary of the State Denise Merrill said Gov. Dannel P. Malloy now has until March 10 to issue a Writ of Special Election to choose Holder-Winfield’s successor. That special election must be held 46 days after the writ is issued.
