4 Lauded For Helping Kids On Bus Stuck On Train Tracks
NORWALK, Conn. (AP) – Norwalk’s Police Commission has honored four people for helping 40 children safely get off a school bus that stalled on rail tracks before a train came to a stop 10 feet from the crossing.
The Hour of Norwalk reports that school bus driver Victor Monte, Subway restaurant employee Shahcat Kahn, Melissa Acevado and Acevado’s 13-year-old son, Corey, were honored Monday night.
Monte called it the worst situation a bus driver could be in.
He says he stopped at the rail crossing as required last Dec. 18 and the bus stalled as he started to drive over the tracks.
He got the children off the bus, and Kahn and the Acevados helped the children to safety.
Police commissioners called the actions of Monte, Kahn and the Acevados heroic and courageous.
