East Hartford Firefighter Injured Trying To Rescue Jumper

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ An East Hartford firefighter was injured when he stepped onto a snow-covered skylight and fell into a parking garage stairwell while trying to rescue a man who jumped off the Interstate 84 bridge over the Connecticut River.

Officials say Chief Training Officer James Silver broke his right ankle and suffered facial injuries Thursday, but is now at home recovering.

Fire Chief John Oates says Silver was on the roof of a parking garage that overlooks the river, trying to find the best way to access the jumper, when he fell through a skylight covered by about a foot of snow.

Police say the man who jumped from the bridge survived a fall onto ice on the river and was taken to a hospital. His name and condition haven’t been released.
