Residents Express Outrage Over Electric Costs

FARMINGTON, Conn. (CBS Connecticut) _ The Public Utilities Regulatory Authority held a public forum Thursday night at the Farmington Senior Center where residents could voice their concerns with competitive electric suppliers.

The general consensus – outrage.

“I made the mistake of going with Discount Power, which is a total ripoff, but now I have to live with that,” said Dennis Matfus of Cheshire.

He was among the over three dozen people who packed the room, each with horrifying stories about their electric bills.

Bristol’s Russell Drachenberg said, “It was a $20 difference, that’s $240 a year.”

Salome Tsurtsumia from Newington said, “From last year, at the same time, it was from $176 it went up to $596.”

Most said if PURA can’t regulate the electric industry, they shouldn’t allow multiple suppliers.

Three more forums are planned next week.
