Attack Sub ‘Virginia’ Returns To Groton

GROTON, Conn. (AP) _ An attack submarine has returned to Groton following a six-month deployment.

USS Virginia and its crew of more than 130 sailors arrived Thursday at the Naval Submarine Base. Six babies, including twin girls, were born during the deployment and were meeting their fathers for the first time.

The 377-foot-long submarine called on ports in Norway, Scotland and England during its second overseas deployment.
She was commissioned in 2004 as the first in the Navy’s newest class of attack submarines, capable of diving to depths greater than 800 feet and operating at speeds faster than 25 knots when submerged. The vessel is equipped with missiles to attack targets on land and can conduct covert surveillance of land and sea.
