Republican Candidates For Governor Fielding Complaints, They Say

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) – Connecticut GOP gubernatorial candidates say they’re hearing many complaints from teachers about Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s education overhaul and believe it’s a constituency that could vote Republican in November.

Despite the recent delay of some key provisions of the law, the contenders say they’re hearing frustration about the implementation of Common Core standards, teacher evaluations and other proposals.

Teachers contend the initiatives were pursued with little input from those in the classroom.

Malloy has yet to announce his re-election plans.

His spokesman says the governor heard the concerns and wants to ensure the reforms are done correctly.

Greenwich businessman Tom Foley is among the candidates running for governor.

He says union leaders may back Malloy, but he believes many rank-and-file teachers will be willing to back a Republican.
