TAMPA, Fla. (AP) _ New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter doesn’t know whether suspended teammate Alex Rodriguez will join the team at spring training this month.
Rodriguez was dealt the most severe punishment in the history of baseball’s drug agreement when an arbitrator ruled last month the third baseman is suspended for the entire 2014 season for violations of the drug rules and the sport’s labor contract.
Baseball’s drug rules say suspensions cover the regular season and postseason but specifically exempt spring training. However, the Yankees are not likely to want Rodriguez at their camp, which opens Feb. 14.
Jeter says “I have no idea” and adds “you’d have to ask him.”
At the time of the arbitration decision, A-Rod’s spokesman said the player wanted to be with the team in Tampa.
