HARTFORD (CBS Connecticut) -- An engineering unit is the first Connecticut National Guard unit to deploy in 2014.  Major General Thaddeus J. Martin says the 242nd Engineer Detachment headed for Fort Bliss, Texas, from Bradley Airport on Thursday,  and from there will deploy to Southwest Asia in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

The nine-member unit based in Niantic is commanded by Col. John Whitford.  It’s expected to be gone nine to twelve months.

The unit will serve as part of a task force helping reduce and consolidate bases during the drawdown of  U.S. combat forces  from Afghanistan.  They also are expected to work with and train Afghan engineers to take over management of base support,  and to complete ongoing infrastructure improvements.
