Former Police Detective Convicted Of Stealing From Evidence Locker

EAST HAVEN, Conn. (AP) _ A former East Haven police detective has been convicted of stealing more than $1,300 from a police evidence locker.

The New Haven Register reports a six-member jury convicted Michael D’Amato on Monday of second-degree larceny and tampering with physical evidence.

The theft occurred in March 2011.  D’Amato retired from the department in December 2011 and was charged in May 2012.

Prosecutors presented video evidence during the trial showing D’Amato entering and leaving the evidence room the day the money disappeared.

He faces up to 10 years in prison when he is sentenced.
