On this Super Sunday, we’ve returned from Cincinnati where the Huskies played perhaps their most complete game of the season. Forget who the opponent was, UConn is supposed to dominate the Bearcats and that’s what they did. But it’s how they did it. Last season, it was 41-9 at the half. Saturday it was 41-11. But the energy of every player was evident the entire 40 minutes. The worked hard, played hard and executed on both ends. The ingredients of a UConn Women’s Basketball Team. As we get into February, the Huskies are very much looking forward to a visit from #5 (for now) Louisville next weekend. But SMU comes first on Tuesday at Gampel Pavilion, where the Huskies haven’t played at since January 7th.
The way Breanna Stewart and Bria Hartley are playing right now, with plenty of help, makes UConn very hard to beat. Bria is in the midst of her best scoring stretch of her career…30, 20, 26 and upper teens. Then this assist thing too where she picked up her first double-double of her career with 11 dimes in Philly Tuesday. And she didn’t even lead the team that night…Moriah Jefferson is on the road to smashing the UConn/Sophomore record for assist to turnover ratio. Right now it’s 3.5…Crazy…Between the assists and the aggressiveness on defense where she leads the team in steals, it’s scary to think just how good she’ll be.
Now as for the #2 team in the nation, Notre Dame just handed a major tail whipping to #3 Duke in Durham. The Irish is the only team that can beat UConn…Why ?? Like I need to answer that….The news ladies of the ACC are gonna come in an spoil the party…And yes, they are a better, deeper team without Skylar Diggins..No drama either..So I ask the question…How wide is the gap between the top 2 and everyone else ?? And here’s another issue to consider. What if Louisville plays UConn well in the 3 meetings before the NCAA’s or I dare say, even beats them once ?? The Cards could play themselves into a #1 seed for the Big Event and send UConn to Lincoln. But there is still plenty of time to determine the top seeds…(okay, UConn, ND and Stanford right now)..
No Geno Show this week, but the Huskies host SMU and the AAC’s Top Scorer, Keena Mays on Tuesday at Gampel Pavilion…And don’t forget the Men’s tilt at Cincinnati Thursday. How crazy will Fifth/Third Arena be then ?? All games right here on WTIC…Oh yeah…Seahawks 24, Broncos 23… 🙂
