Police Officer Suspended For Racist Facebook Post About Obama
PLEASANTVILLE, Conn. (CBS Hartford) — A racist, vulgar Facebook post about President Barack Obama by a police officer has caused the cop to be suspended from duty.
Officer Peter Burns has been suspended for 60-days without pay or benefits by Police Chief Richard Love after the Board of Trustees passed a resolution allowing Love to punish Burns. The officer will also have to forfeit 25 vacation days, undergo a psychological evaluation, attend a training program focused on diversity and sensitivity, and he’s been placed on a two-year “last chance” agreement, The Journal News reported.
On Dec. 11 Burns posted on Facebook under the name “Coon Trapper” where he used the “N word” to describe Obama and called him “un-American.”
“The fact that he (Obama) is still alive bewilders me,” Burns wrote in the diatribe. “Go die in a shallow grave you Muslim commie … ”
Mayor Peter Scherer said the Burns’ Facebook post was “offensive on many levels — its obscenity, its racial language and its implied threat to the president,” The Journal News reported.
The 35-year-old officer was suspended by Love Dec. 17 after the police chief was showed the racist post. Love said it was “totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”
“These statements undermine the confidence in law enforcement, and they cast doubt on the ability of this officer to fulfill his sworn duty in a fair, unbiased manner,” Scherer explained to The Journal News. “I want to be clear that the village has no interest in the political beliefs of its employees. Officer Burns has provided an apology to the community at large and to Pleasantville residents, as well as to the chief and his colleagues in the police department.”
Burns joined the police department in 2004 and earns $98,949 annually.
