New Britain Officer Seriously Injured

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (CBS Connecticut) _ A New Britain police officer is hospitalized in stable condition serious condition after being hit by a stolen car overnight.  Police found the vehicle about twelve hours later on Sandy Brook Drive,  but are continuing their search for the driver.

The officer was struck, run over and dragged down a Wilcox Street driveway when approaching a vehicle that had been reported stolen. He underwent nine hours of surgery

It happened all around 8:30 p.m. last night. The officer was taken to the hospital and into surgery for serious injuries sustained in the incident.

The   blue 2011 Hyundai Sonata with CT plates 491ZUO  was seized as evidence as police continued their investigation.

Police say the investigation remains active, and anyone with information is asked to call  New Britain police at (860) 826-3000,  or the Tip Line at (860)826-3199

Chief James Wardwell told reporters crisis intervention counselors would be available for members of the department,  who worked through the night on the case.  Even as he briefed reporters, the call to Sandy Brook Drive came in, sending officers assembled with him scrambling for their cruisers and leaving the Chestnut Street Police HQ, lights flashing.
