People who use the Farmington Canal Heritage Greenway are hoping that a missing sculpture of a bicyclist will be returned.

MaryAnne Krajcik says the bright yellow statue was installed in memory of her friend Martin Nieb, who regularly rode his bicycle on the trail.

“Every time you would drive by, you would remember Martin riding his bike on the trail,” Krajcik said. “Different people would plant flowers in the summer around it. Last winter when it was really snowy, someone put a ski cap on it.

“You would drive by it and it would put a smile on your face,” Krajcik said.

The pipes that held the statue in place were broken, but it was unclear if someone had the intention to steal it, or if they might have hit it with a car and put it in their trunk.

Police are investigating.
