At Gulfstream Park in South Florida, the winner of the fifth race Thursday was a first-time starter whose name is “Hartford.” But the thoroughbred appears to have no direct connection to Connecticut. A spokesman at Gulfstream says the horse is named for the Hartford Family Winery in California.
The track announcer told the fans on hand that Hartford ran “a Whale of a race,” and we’re told he was humming the celebratory march associated with the Hartford Whalers “Brass Bonanza” in the press box.
Hartford paid $3 for the win. And, while his odds for the Kentucky Derby were 100-to-1 in Las Vegas before the race, after the race his odds for the Derby had dropped to 40-to-1.
