NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - New Haven Mayor Toni Harp has accepted the city police chief’s offer to create a security detail for her that includes two police officers.

It’s the first time in 20 years that city officers will be guarding and driving around the mayor.

Former Mayor John DeStefano, who recently left office after not seeking re-election, dropped the practice during his two decades as mayor.

Mayors in Hartford and Bridgeport drive themselves around.

Harp says no threatening things have happened to her during her first weeks in office.

She said she accepted Police Chief Dean Esserman’s security proposal in case something does happen.

The police union president, Lou Cavaliere, says officers are concerned about taking two officers off patrols to guard Harp when the department isn’t fully staffed.
