HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield of Connecticut officials have told Gov. Dannel P. Malloy they’ve processed 45 percent of the payments for new enrollees who signed up for health insurance coverage that was supposed to begin Jan. 1.
Malloy said Wednesday that he met the day before with both the outgoing and incoming presidents of Anthem’s state operations and was provided with the figure. Malloy said the number of processed payments is “expected to rise rapidly.”
Malloy said he urged Anthem to use TV and print advertising to explain the situation to the customers, who signed up for coverage through the state’s health insurance marketplace, Access Health CT. Anthem, which received more applications for individual health coverage than the two other private insurers offering plans on Access Health CT, has a backlog in processing applications submitted by a Dec. 23 deadline to get coverage starting Jan. 1.
The insurer has created a new customer service email system to assist new enrollees who are still awaiting confirmation of coverage and payment. In a consumer alert issued Wednesday, Connecticut’s Department of Insurance said people can send emails to ask about their application status, payment status, prescription benefits, provider participation status and other issues. Enrollees should visit https://www.anthem.com/forms/cs/customerservice.html to submit their questions. A membership identification number is not required. They can also visit http://www.Anthem.com.
Anthem has also extended its deadline until Jan. 31 to make the first premium payment for coverage that was supposed to start Jan. 1.
“As long as you are making your payment, you can get your card, you can get what you need,” Malloy said. “I am confident they are making substantial progress.”
