One Dead In Early-Morning New Haven Accident

NEW HAVEN (CBS Connecticut) — New Haven police say a passenger died early this morning after an accident in which a car hit a utility pole.  Police say the 36-year-old Walter Ruiz of New Haven was a passenger in the rear seat,  and was believed to have been leaning forward between the two front seats of the 2003 BMW 325 at the time of the crash.

The driver, 43-year-old Dieter Delgado of New Haven, told police he was leaving Interstate 91 northbound at the State Street off-ramp shortly after 1:00 a.m.  when he swerved to avoid another vehicle and hit the utility pole.  He and two other passengers were treated for their injuries.  Ruiz was pronounced dead at the scene.
