Sailor From Waterbury Dies In Guam

WATERBURY, Conn. (CBS Connecticut) The U.S. Navy has confirmed the death of a 19-year-old sailor from Waterbury.

They say Petty Officer 3rd Class Rjay Domondon drowned while spear fishing in Guam on Sunday. His body was found early Monday morning.

He was assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 25 on the island. He joined the Navy in July 2012 and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal during his service.

“This young man was a dedicated, personable and highly motivated Sailor,” said Cmdr. Gregory Leland, HSC-25 commanding officer. “Always willing to go the extra step to assist others, he earned the immediate respect of every Sailor he came in contact with. He was a courageous young man who embodied living life to its fullest and enjoyed working out, playing sports and traveling.”
