Waterbury Police: Man ‘Snapped’ When Killing Mom

WATERBURY, Conn. (AP) _ Police say a Waterbury man accused of strangling his mother and wrapping her body in an air mattress “snapped” during a fight with her a few days after Christmas.

An arrest warrant says Liam Dooley said his mother, 48-year-old Michele McCarthy, bit him on the hand and scratched him during an argument.

The 23-year-old Dooley was arraigned on a murder charge on Thursday.

Police say Dooley initially denied killing his mother, but later confessed.

McCarthy’s 20-year-old daughter hadn’t heard from her mother and went to check on her Tuesday, which prompted a search by police who found her body.

Dooley didn’t comment during the arraignment hearing and was placed on a suicide watch. He’s being held on a $1.5 million bond.
