STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Stamford is trying to turn down the volume on its building boom.

The southwest Connecticut city that capitalized on its proximity to New York City and became a financial and business center in its own right now wants to lower the decibels on construction.

The Hearst Connecticut Media Group reports (http://bit.ly/KkyLgx ) that a proposed ordinance would curtail loud construction or demolition noise between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. Current nighttime noise limits don’t kick in until 8 p.m.

The ordinance would limit the decibels during construction and other activities in a residential zone to 55 decibels during the day and 45 decibels at night.

Police say an unintended consequence of the rules could be restrictions on lawnmowers.

The proposed rule is in response to complaints about construction of a pharmacy
