HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Hikers who want to chill out after New Year’s Eve parties can indulge themselves in four Connecticut state park hikes on New Year’s Day.

First Day Hikes are planned for Sleeping Giant State Park in Hamden, Mansfield Hollow State Park in Mansfield, Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison and Osbornedale State Park in Derby.

Dogs are allowed at Mansfield Hollow and Osbornedale State Park, but must be on a leash. Dogs are not permitted at Hammonasset and Sleeping Giant parks.

Hikes range from relatively flat areas to some rock scrambling. The hikes are between one to five miles.

State environmental officials say First Day Hikes began more than 20 years ago in Massachusetts. Last year, for the first time, all 50 state park systems sponsored First Day hikes.
